Parliament Coffee is an independent coffee roastery and café with a focus on specialty coffee and a design-conscious brand identity. The project involved custom WordPress theme development, completed while consulting with the team at Eastern Standard.
Front-end development was the primary scope of the engagement — building the WordPress theme's presentation layer using JavaScript and Sass. Sass (Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets) is a CSS preprocessor that enables variables, nesting, mixins, and modular stylesheet organization, making it particularly practical for building and maintaining a custom WordPress theme where consistency of styling across many components needs to be managed efficiently.
The visual design of the Parliament Coffee site was built around minimalist conventions — clean typography, deliberate whitespace, and a layout approach that gives product and brand imagery significant visual weight. Animated components were implemented in JavaScript to add motion to specific UI elements without relying on CSS-only animations, providing polished transitions or reveals that reinforced the design's quality-forward aesthetic.
Coffee brands at the specialty and independent level compete substantially on brand identity and visual presentation — the site serves as a primary expression of the brand for customers and wholesale buyers encountering it online. The theming work required close attention to the design specifications provided by Eastern Standard's creative team, translating a design intent centered on imagery and minimal styling into a functional WordPress theme that held up across different content configurations and screen sizes.
