SkinMedica is a professional skincare and cosmeceutical brand that sells physician-grade products through authorized dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and aestheticians, as well as directly to consumers. The project was a Tenthwave engagement to revamp the site's theme for SkinMedica's PHP-based Symfony e-commerce application.
Symfony is a PHP MVC framework used for building structured web applications. The existing Skinmedica e-commerce application was built on Symfony, and the project involved building a new visual theme for the application rather than rebuilding the underlying platform. This approach — reskinning an existing application within the framework's template system — requires understanding Symfony's templating layer (Twig), how the existing controllers and views are structured, and where CSS and JavaScript fit within the application's asset pipeline.
The restyling scope covered the full range of customer-facing pages: account management pages, form elements, checkout pages, and product display pages. The authorized physician locator — a feature relevant to a brand that sells through a network of medical professionals — was restyled to match the updated design, and the front end was extended with jQuery-powered dynamic elements including slideshows and modal components.
Several API integrations are part of the site's front-end architecture, consistent with an e-commerce platform that may need to connect to payment processing, shipping, physician locator data, or product content services. Tenthwave managed the project and client relationship, with development work contributing the front-end theming layer within the agency's technical scope for the SkinMedica account.
